As you can see from the photos, the environment was lab-like indeed. Northeast Philly was home to Olde Towne Productions, a small Christian company that auditioned musicians and brought the original band members together. They were all attending either Temple University or West Chester State (now West Chester University).
The end product of the recording session was a 45 RPM single (a flat vinyl disc with grooves for play on a device called a phonograph. Sounds nigh unto prehistoric, right?) I remember proudly playing the 45 for my college roommate. At the time, the thought of my brother’s band making a record was a marvel in its own right, but the music was what really intrigued me.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Pre A Cappella” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center|color:%23d46240″ use_theme_fonts=”yes” fit_bg_text=”0″][vc_column_text]Many people know GLAD for our a cappella work, unaware that we began as a band — five guys who sang and played instruments — during our college years. We would not make our first all a cappella album, the one that really seemed to put us on the map, until 15 years later.
The original band members first entered a recording studio in 1973 (I started with the band a little later). That was the year of the Paris Peace Accords ending US involvement in Vietnam. The year the Watergate hearings began. The year the Supreme Court handed down Roe v. Wade, the OPEC embargo doubled the price of oil, and the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City were completed.
Momentous times … and momentous days for five college freshmen. As I review the news of that year and try to conjure up the ethos of those days—it’s remarkable to think that my brother and four other guys, all relative strangers at the time, were (unwittingly) birthing what would become one of Christian music’s most eclectic and enduring groups. I don’t mean that to sound lofty, but no question, GLAD was an amalgam of many musical influences and long-lasting beyond what any us could have imagined!

Want to hear more? Follow along as my brother Ed, founder and lead vocalist, and some of us other band members share the history and impact of GLAD’s music ministry over four decades. We hope you enjoy reliving the journey with us!
