1. How did GLAD get started?
GLAD was put together by audition in the early ’70s. A Philadelphia-based group known as “The Fellowship” auditioned Christian musicians at many of their concerts, eventually compiling a list of possibilities from which the original members of GLAD were chosen. The original members were all in college, so the group toured primarily in the summer with occasional gigs during the school year. During 1976 everyone graduated and together made the decision to try to make a go of it as a Christian band — a risky proposition in those days.
2. Who were the original members of GLAD?
Ed Nalle (lead vocals, guitar ); Bob Kauflin (keyboards, vocals); T. Coble (bass, vocals); John Bolles (guitar, vocals); Brad Curry (drums). Fred Kramer replaced T. on bass from ’73 to ’75 when Don Nalle (Ed’s brother) joined.
3. Is GLAD an acronym? I.e., does it stand for something?
GLAD is not an acronym. Members of the band took a list of names to a local shopping mall and polled passersby. The name “GLAD” did not win the poll, but it became the name anyway. Ed tells more of the story here. In the late ’80s, a friend of the group with a gift for calligraphy wrote out many of the Scriptures containing the word “glad”. The framed piece she created adorned the wall in the GLAD office for many years.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1554500409736{margin-left: 4px !important;padding-bottom: 15px !important;}”]
4. Who were the other members of the band through the years?
Keyboards and vocals: Tom Beard took over Bob Kauflin’s role on keyboards and vocals in late 1984. He was followed by Rob Neal, Jeff Hamlin, Paul Langford, and finally, Don Pardoe.
Bass guitar and vocals: Fred Kramer followed T. Coble. He played with GLAD in 1974-75, a period when the group was playing most local gigs in and around Philadelphia. Mark Wilson assumed the role when Don Nalle left the road in 1987. Jim Bullard served from 1991 to 2000 when Don Nalle returned to the road.
Guitar and vocals: Wayne Farley and Jim Gheen came on board in 1979 after John Bolles moved on. Yes, for a short time, the band had six members. Wayne and Jim were succeeded by Mark Baldwin in 1980 and then Chris Davis in 1982.
Drums: Wayne Farley’s brother Mark manned the drums when Brad Curry departed in 1979. Then came Art Noble in 1980 and John Gates in 1986.

6. What’s the story behind naming the band’s original Chevy van, “Martina”?
What I (Don) recall is that Brad’s first girlfriend was named “Martina.” For an answer on how the van came to be called that, I’ll have to let other band members chime in. The vehicle was a 1967 Chevrolet panel van, with a wall two-thirds of the way back to provide for equipment storage. Whatever picture comes to mind … this was shabbier yet.
One of our early tours in that van took us from Philadelphia to Harlingen, Texas — 1900 miles one way. We crammed six people into the tiny space. Only the driver and the person riding shotgun got actual seats; the rest sat on the floor, on top of a trunk filled with drums, or on the steel engine cover. We’re talking Texas. In summer. With no air conditioning. Those in the back didn’t get enough ventilation from the two front windows, so we propped one of the side doors open with a coat hanger. Oh, the glamour of road life! Unfortunately, I don’t know of any photos.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1554500430749{padding-right: 5% !important;padding-left: 5% !important;}”]
7. What was the meaning of “avantChristiclasscontemporock”?
In the early days of performing our original music, people would ask what kind of music we did, and we’d have no concise, satisfying answer. So we began looking for some kind of shorthand to describe our style. As you may have guessed, the term combined the words avant-garde, Christian, classical, contemporary and rock (and managed to keep them alphabetical). It probably applied to our first album, “GLAD”, released in 1978), more than our later work, and never got traction even with us, but it was fun trying to invent a term to clarify what we were aiming for.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
